MPH Portfolio
Every MPH student in the College of Public Health and Health Professions is encouraged to maintain an MPH Portfolio during their Master of Public Health program. The purpose of the Portfolio is to prepare students for job searching and interviewing. Key elements include:
- Tables of competencies, both MPH core and interdisciplinary competencies, as well as concentration-specific competencies
- A CV and/or a resume
- Writing samples from courses
- Special Project report and power point presentation
Students may also identify other materials they would like to have available for potential employers.
Graduates of MPH programs are expected to be competent in an extensive set of skills, defined by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH, www.asph.org) for all MPH graduates and by individual disciplines for each concentration. A certification examination for MPH graduates, based on the ASPH competencies will become available in summer 2008.
Including the tables of competencies and corresponding coursework through which they are addressed in the MPH Portfolio serves three purposes. First, the competencies are always available as a reference for the goals that students should target for achievement. Second, by tracking progress on achievement of competencies throughout their MPH programs, students can identify any areas that are deficient in their programs of study and work with their advisors to make certain that those shortcomings are addressed before graduation. Third, the competencies describe what a fully prepared MPH graduate should be able to do. Being conversant about one’s skills and knowledge is fundamental to strong applications and interviews for professional positions.
Each table identifies a specific set of competencies and the MPH courses through which they are addressed. The last column, Comments, provides space for students to indicate their own assessments of the extent to which they believe they have accomplished each competency. Competencies that have not been accomplished through the identified coursework should be discussed with supervisory committee members and/or MPH program administrators.
